This is how you take ‘normal’ 48MP photos with an iPhone 14 Pro (without ProRAW!)

Did you know that you can capture not only ProRAW DNG files but also 48MP HEIC files on your iPhone 14 Pro? We’ll show you how to do this!

Take 48MP HEIC photos with an iPhone 14 Pro

With an iPhone 14 Pro you can take beautiful 48MP photos that are saved as ProRAW DNG files. The biggest disadvantage is that these files are enormous, no less than 70 MB. That of course takes up space.

Luckily, there’s a way around this and just take 48MP photos that are then saved as HEIC files. Reddit user grapplerone has shared this solution online.

Convert format with the Assignments app

Although Grapplerone shoots photos at 48MP in ProRaw, it automatically converts the photos to HEIC and also automatically deletes the original files. The 48MP is therefore retained, but the file size becomes considerably smaller.

You can automate this process in the Shortcuts app so that it runs every time the camera app is closed. The command converts 48MP raw to 48MP HEIC which greatly reduces the file size. The photo still looks great when you zoom in.

Automate 48MP HEIC process

The first thing you need to do to convert your 48MP DNG photos to HEIC is the download command. You can then immediately execute this manually. But it’s even easier to make sure the command runs automatically when you quit the camera app. You do this as follows:

  1. Open the Assignments app and tap ‘Automation’ at the bottom;

  2. Tap the + sign at the top right and then tap ‘Personal Automation’;

  3. Tap ‘app’ and then ‘Choose’ behind ‘App’;

  4. Tap ‘Camera’ and then ‘Done’;

  5. Just activate ‘Close’ and tap ‘Next’;

  6. Tap ‘Add Task’, then ‘Script’, then ‘Run Command’;

  7. Tap ‘Assignment’ and select the assignment you downloaded;

  8. Tap Next, turn off Ask Before Run, then tap Done.

Then follow these three steps:

  • Open the ‘Settings’ app;
  • Tap ‘Commands’ and then ‘Advanced’;
  • Turn on ‘Allow deletion without confirmation’.
48MP HEIC

To ensure that the original files are deleted, also follow these steps:

  • Open the ‘Assignments’ app;
  • Tap the three dots of the ‘Convert raw to HEIC’ command;
  • Tap the ‘i’ at the bottom of the screen and then ‘Privacy’;
  • Under photos, select ‘Delete without confirmation’.

From now on, your 48MP DNG files will be automatically converted to HEIC when you exit the camera app and the original DNG files will also be deleted automatically.
