Translation app Microsoft Translator has added a handy new feature, allowing you to not only translate offline, but even convert entire web pages into Dutch. This is how it works.
To use the website translation feature, you need the most recent version of Microsoft Translator. So check whether you have version 2.13 or higher. With Microsoft Translator you can translate written words into more than 40 different languages, including Dutch, in addition to spoken language. If you’re viewing a website on your iPhone, it’s just a hassle to copy and paste the text into the Translator box. The new Safari extension from Microsoft Translator is therefore justified.
If you want to use the Safari extension, you have to set it up properly in the app. You do this by opening Translator and then in the settings (via the gear wheel) go to ‘Safari translation language’. Then choose the language you want to convert the websites to to finish setting up the extension. Now open Safari and follow the steps below to set up the extension.
Activate Microsoft Translator extension
- Open Safari and any website;
- Tap the share icon (the square with the arrow pointing up in it);
- Swipe from left to right across the bottom row of gray and white icons and choose ‘More’;
- Set the switch behind Microsoft Translator to green in the extension overview;
- Use the three horizontal bars to place the Microsoft Translator extension in a convenient place.
Now you are ready to start translating websites with Microsoft Translator. Keep in mind that the translations into Dutch are not always perfect, but it is a useful tool if you do not understand what is written. A godsend if, for example, you are on vacation and still need to look up some local information.
This is how you translate websites on your iPhone with Microsoft Translator
- Open a website you want to translate;
- Tap the share icon;
- Choose the Microsoft Translator icon from the list of extensions;
- A yellow bar will appear at the top of Safari to show how far the translation is;
- If the percentage is 100 percent, all text on the page has been translated.
Microsoft Translator was released in August 2015 and has been regularly provided with useful updates since then. Especially the option to save translated sentences so that you can find them later is very useful. The app is free to download and contains no in-app purchases.
