After months of delay and inconsistent functionality, the rollout of Google’s long-awaited dark mode for Gmail seems finally complete for the iPhone and iPad.
Dark mode in Gmail on iPhone and iPad
All people with an iPhone and iPad should now be able to turn on Gmail’s dark mode. The app has been updated to version 6.0.200519, which means that the new feature should now work for everyone. However, this did not go without a struggle for Google.
Google announced dark mode for its Gmail app in September 2019. Since then, implementation in iOS has been a major problem for the company. For example, some users were already able to activate dark mode, but it disappeared when the app was restarted. Others have not had access to the feature at all so far.

Here’s how to set up Gmail’s dark mode on your iPhone or iPad:
- Start the Gmail app;
- Tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines in the top left corner);
- Scroll down and tap Settings;
- Press Theme;
- Select Dark or System Default. The latter option automatically sets Gmail’s theme based on your device’s system settings. This is especially useful if you have set your iOS theme to change for day or night.
Exit and restart the app if you cannot find dark mode in Gmail on your iPhone or iPad. If this does not work, check to be sure that you have installed the latest update with version number 6.0.200519.
Don’t have the app on your device yet? Then use the link below to download Gmail from the App Store.
