Music app without Apple Music
When Apple Music came out in June 30, 2015, there was no new app, but the music service became part of Apple’s Music app. The app can also be used without Apple Music to play your own music, for example songs that you previously bought via iTunes, but Apple regularly asks to switch to Apple Music.
The tabs at the bottom of the screen also look different. For example, as a non-subscriber you can navigate to ‘New’ and ‘For you’, but those are Apple Music functions that you as a non-subscriber do not use. If you tap it, you will be asked to become a subscriber.
That’s how you turn it off
Don’t plan to use Apple Music, but the Music app is? Then you can turn off the Apple Music functions. Follow the steps below to do that.
- Go to the ‘Settings’ app;
- Tap on ‘Music’;
- Behind ‘Show Apple Music’ you set the green slider to white.
If you now open the Music app, the functions of Apple Music are missing. The only tabs you will still see are ‘My Music’, ‘Playlists’, ‘Radio’ and ‘Connect’.

Only offline music
If you want to see what music you’ve downloaded offline, you can turn it on in the Music app. This is an easy way to see what music you can listen to without consuming data. For that you do the following.
- Open the Music app;
- Go to ‘My music’ at the bottom left of the screen;
- Tap Albums, Artists, or Songs, depending on how your music is sorted;
- In the next window, tap on ‘Downloaded music only’.
This will only show songs and artists that you have on the iPhone. You can change this at any time by turning the slider off again. If you want to use Apple Music, you set that slider to green.
