This way you can change your WiFi password

If you have just bought a new router, it is important that you change the WiFi password. This way you prevent someone from entering your network with a default password. But how exactly do you do that? In this article we explain how you can change your WiFi password. To begin with, it is important that you have a computer that is connected to your network.

You change the WiFi password of your router via a browser on you Windowscomputer or Mac (Book). You need the configuration page of your router for this. To do this, you go to the default IP address of your router. Normally you can find it by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, but your router may have a different address.

Look up router address

In many cases, the router’s address is on a sticker on the bottom of the device. If that is not the case, you can find out that address in another way. On Windows, open the start menu and type in the letters cmd. Now open the Command Prompt program and then type in ipconfig. The numbers next to Default Gateway is the address you should have.

Do you have a Mac? Then go to your network settings. Click on the network you are connected to and press the button for advanced settings. Click on the tab labeled TCP / IP. The numbers next to the Router section is the address you are looking for.

Log in to your router

Now that we have entered the address in the address bar of your browser, which browser it is does not matter, we can log in to the router. When you land on the page, you will see a login screen. You must enter a username and password here.

In many cases you enter both admin or useradmin, while in other cases you only enter admin for username. The login details are often stated in the manual of the router. Otherwise, you can probably request that information from the Internet service provider; sometimes that data is also on the bottom of the router.

Once logged in, look for a heading in the menu that refers to wireless security settings. These are often words and terms such as Wireless network, Wireless, Wireless, Wireless security or Security. The terms and words depend on the set language, as well as the manufacturer of the router in question.

Change WiFi password

Once you have found the correct settings, we can adjust the WiFi password. On the page for securing your wireless network, look for WiFi password, WiFi password, security key or security key. Next to that option is a (sometimes empty) field with space for your password. Also check if your network security is in order. Are the options WPA2, WPA3 or AES available? Then choose one of them. WPA2 is now the most common.

If you want to change the name of your network, this is also the place where you can do that. Only do this if you have not yet connected any device to your network (except your computer), because after adjusting you will need to reconnect all your devices that are wirelessly connected to that network.

There are a number of tips for choosing your password. You can be very difficult with all kinds of punctuation marks and numbers, but such passwords are difficult to remember. You can also come up with some kind of passphrase that makes a lot of sense to you. Memorizing a sentence is easier than any sequence of characters. Don’t make it too personal, otherwise someone might still be able to guess it and still enter your network.

After adjusting the data, press the save button. After that, your WiFi network will have a new password (and possibly a new name as well).
