This way you clean up iOS apps without deleting important data

If you want to free up space on your iPhone, it is smart to delete your apps, but then you have often lost all your data. Fortunately, there is also the option to clean up your apps: this way your data is saved and only unnecessary data is thrown away. That is how it works.

This is how you clean up iOS apps

Apps are taking up more and more space on your iPhone. If you don’t use an app often, but want to keep it because you don’t want to delete your data, you can also ‘clean up’ an iOS app. This frees up storage space without removing the app icon and your data in the app. This is how you do it:

  1. Go to settings and tap on ‘General’;
  2. Tap iPhone Storage;
  3. Scroll down and tap an app you want to clean up;
  4. Tap ‘clean up’ and confirm your choice.

Your documents and data are still saved and the app icon is still on your home screen. There is only a cloud with an arrow in front of it. If you are going to use the app again, simply tap the icon and wait for the app to (automatically) download again. Now you can pick up where you left off.

Automatically clean up apps

You can also choose to automatically clean up apps if you haven’t used them for a while. This way, your storage space does not fill up unnoticed with all kinds of data that is of no use to you. To do this, go to General in settings, tap on ‘iPhone storage’ and switch on ‘Clean up apps’. Do you want to turn this off again? Then go to ‘iTunes Store and App Store’ in settings and turn off the slider at the bottom.
