iMacs already have excellent built-in speakers available as standard. However, if you are not completely satisfied with the sound quality, you can improve it with an application like Boom 2.
Optimize your Mac speakers
An all-in-one like the iMac is not only suitable as a productivity machine, but also, for example, as a multimedia device in a living room or bedroom. This is thanks to the excellent image and sound quality. In the latter area, there is still some profit to be made with apps that optimize the sound. A somewhat expensive, but easy-to-use option is Boom 2. The app has been available in the Mac App Store for quite some time and – for good reason – has many positive reviews.
After starting Boom 2, a short calibration follows to determine the optimal volume and levels for bass, mid and treble. The app plays a piece of music to tell you the difference with the sound when the equalizer is not turned on. Then several options are offered to further adjust the sound quality to your taste. The interface is neat and clear and is largely Dutch.
Despite the fact that iMac only has two stereo speakers with a power of 10W, you can squeeze out a fuller sound and decent volume with Boom 2. Of course you can also use the app to make the speakers of your MacBook (Pro) sound better. It is nice that the audio amplification applies to all parts of the system, not just for iTunes or Spotify, for example. In addition, there are various pre-sets to choose from and you can determine per song how loud this should sound. Useful if certain songs in your library sound significantly softer than others.
Pricey
As mentioned, Boom 2 is relatively pricey for what is essentially a nice equalizer. The app is available for 19.99 euros in the Mac App Store, although it is possible to order this Try it free for 7 days. If you don’t want to spend any money at all, you can get the latest version of Soundflower and Apple’s AU Lab to download. After installation you can use these programs to create a create your own equalizer for OS X.. This takes a bit more time in experimenting to get the right sound quality, but can save you two decades.
