This way you save memory with Apple Music optimized storage

If you are a member of Apple Music, no doubt you have saved your favorite albums offline. To ensure that your offline music collection does not fill your entire iPhone, you can set a limit. This is how this Apple Music Optimized Storage feature works.

Apple Music Optimized Storage, that’s how it works

The big advantage of local music on your iPhone is of course that you can also listen to it offline. Handy if you go abroad, or need to be careful with your data bundle. Most popular music services have an offline option. However, Apple has added a handy extra that makes managing Apple Music’s local storage a lot easier.

You can specify a limit for your locally stored music in the music settings. This Optimized Storage looks at all the songs on your iPhone and only erases the ones you hardly listen to. For example, with a storage limit of 4GB, you can still go ahead for quite some time. You activate the Apple Music optimized storage as follows:

  1. Open the Settings app;
  2. Tap the menu option with Music on;
  3. When you have downloaded music you will see ‘optimize storage’;
  4. Tap this and flip the switch to green;

2GB is good for 400 songs

To make it a bit easier, Apple has also put behind each storage option how many songs you can store with it approximately locally. For example, you can store 400 numbers with 2GB, or 3200 numbers if you want to free up 16GB for them.

In addition to this Apple Music Optimized Storage, you can of course also choose to delete songs manually. You can do this by looking for your local music in the Music app and choosing ‘Delete Downloads’ in the options.

As far as we are concerned, however, Optimized Storage is a better choice, because it means you no longer have to dig through your library for songs that can be removed. If your iPhone accidentally deletes a precious song, you can easily download it again when you are connected to WiFi again.
