This way you stream Spotify from your Mac to an AirPlay speaker

Spotify’s Mac app doesn’t have a built-in AirPlay button, but you can add it with a little detour. We show you how this works.

Stream macOS Spotify with AirPlay

Spotify’s macOS app has a striking difference from the iOS variant. Where on your iPhone you send your audio to an AirPlay speaker (such as the HomePod) with the push of a button, this option is unfortunately absent on the Mac.

The only option in the app itself is to use Spotify Connect: a technology of the music service that works on smartphones, game consoles and some smart TVs, for example.

This way you stream Spotify from your Mac to an AirPlay speaker

Do you have a speaker that does not support Spotify Connect, but does have AirPlay? Then with a small detour, you can still stream music from Spotify to it from your Mac. You do this as follows.

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen;
  2. Choose ‘System Preferences’;
  3. Go to ‘Sound’;
  4. Check the box next to ‘Show volume in menu bar’.

A speaker icon will now appear in the menu bar at the top of the screen. By clicking on this, you can choose where your Mac’s sound will be output. These can be the built-in speakers of your iMac or MacBook, those of your monitor or AirPlay speakers.

Wirelessly stream music to your speaker

That way, you can send your Spotify music directly from your Mac to your HomePod or another speaker at the touch of a button. Until Spotify puts AirPlay support in its app, this is the best temporary solution to do this.

Spotify keeps updating its app with new features. For example, you can now operate the music service with Siri and you can create a playlist with your friends with Group Session. In the video below, we list seven smart Spotify tips.
