There is one HomePod in the living room, but your family consists of four people. How do you make sure everyone can add their own playlists, calendars and reminders? This way your HomePod recognizes multiple users.
Let HomePod recognize multiple users
Do you have your HomePod in a central place in the house, such as the living room? There is a good chance that several people will want to use the smart speaker. By default, it only listens to one person, but Siri can handle all people in your household via the settings. This is how your HomePod recognizes multiple users:
- Open the Home app on your iPhone;
- Go to the ‘Home’ tab and tap the house icon;
- Press your name under ‘People’;
- Slide the switch at “Recognize my voice” so that the box turns green;
- Tap Continue and follow the onscreen instructions.

Once you’ve gone through the procedure, the HomePod will listen for multiple voices. From that moment on, your partner, housemate or child can, for example, set up her / his own music, request an agenda and schedule new appointments. The voice recognition function keeps learning and improves over time.
Don’t see the ‘Continue’ button from step five? Then slide the switch at ‘Recognize my voice’ from step 4 again so that the box turns gray. Then tap the button again to turn it green again. You should see a screen inviting you to control the HomePod with your voice.
Requirements
There are a number of conditions that you must meet for your HomePod to recognize multiple users. The first is obvious: they must be part of your family in the Home app. So add the other and give access to your smart household.
In addition, Apple IDs must be secured with two-factor authentication. Are you just using a password to log in to Apple? Then the function will not work. Finally, all iPhones in the household must run at least iOS 13.2. The HomePod itself must be running on tvOS 13.2 or higher. It is also important that Siri speaks the same language as the HomePod.
Compact HomePod on the way
The HomePod has been available for years, but not officially in the Netherlands. However, you can still get the Apple speaker relatively easily at home via gray import. You may want to wait with this, however, because according to the rumor circuit, the company is currently working on a successor.
This compact HomePod would be announced in the coming years and be more affordable than the current generation. Read more about the expected smaller HomePod and stay up to date with all the rumors via our newsletter or download the free iPhoned app.
