When Apple released the AirPods, you could also choose what a double-tapping the earbuds had. A double tap opened Siri by default, thinking that the assistant would pause your music or control the volume. You could also choose to pause your music by double tapping.

In iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra, you can set your preferences for your AirPods. You can even set a different action for each cap. Follow the step-by-step plans below, both for your iPhone or iPad and your Mac.

On your iPhone

Tip: Customize your AirPods shortcuts on your iPhone and Mac
  1. Open ‘Settings’ and go to ‘Bluetooth’;
  2. Tap the blue ‘i’ next to your AirPods;
  3. In the screen that then appears, choose which action you want to assign to which earpiece.

On your Mac

  1. Open ‘System Preferences’ in the Apple menu and go to ‘Bluetooth’;
  2. Click on ‘Options’ next to your AirPods;
  3. In the screen that appears, choose what your different earbuds should do when you double-tap them.

It’s good to remember that the actions you assign to your AirPods generally work for apps. For example, if you choose to have one of your AirPods go to the next song, it does not matter which app you use to play music. The pause button also works in apps such as YouTube or Netflix.
