You can adjust the lighting of your screen on the iPhone yourself, but it can be even darker than you might think. In this tip we explain how that works.
A bright display can be quite annoying, for example if you don’t want to illuminate the entire bedroom or if everyone can read on your screen during a concert. And for your own eyes it is of course not pleasant to look into a bright beam of light. You can adjust the lighting via the control panel (which you open by swiping up from the bottom of the screen).

Dim your iPhone screen via zoom
If this is not yet dark enough, there is a second option to darken the display even more. However, you have to use a detour for that. We explain step by step how to do this:
- Go to the Settings app;
- Select ‘General’ and then ‘Accessibility’;
- Tap on ‘Zoom’ and set the slider behind Zoom to green;
- Tap the screen three times with three fingers to call up a menu;
- Choose ‘Zoom entire screen’ and drag the slider at the bottom of the window to the left to adjust the screen size on your device;
- At ‘Choose filter’, tap on ‘Low light’;
- Tap outside the image to close the menu.
Set shortcut
Now your screen is even darker than usual, but it is a bit too much work to repeat these steps every time you want to darken your screen. You can create a shortcut with the steps below:
- Go to the Settings app;
- Choose ‘General> Accessibility> Activation button (at the very bottom)’;
- Choose ‘Zoom’.
Every time you click three times on the home button, you switch to the set zoom function. You don’t enlarge anything, but the image gets darker. If you press three times again, the screen will become brighter again. This is also useful if you don’t want to keep opening the control panel to dim the screen.
