Siri has become a lot smarter in both iOS 12 and macOS Mojave, now that the voice assistant also remembers your passwords. For example, you can request passwords via Siri in macOS Mojave and iOS 12.
Log in with your voice
Having to remember passwords is a thing of the past, because Apple stores all the data you want in the iCloud Keychain. Account information from programs and sites from both your macOS and iOS devices is stored here encrypted.
If your Mac is still running on High Sierra or older, you must first open Safari and in Preferences open the ‘Passwords’ heading with your password or fingerprint, in order to find your saved login details.
To manually look up your codes in iOS, you must first go to the ‘Passwords and accounts’ menu and open the ‘Passwords’ heading with an access code, Touch ID or Face ID. If you have a lot of login details stored in your Keychain, it takes a while to scroll on your iPhone or iPad before you get the right one.
Apple made this a lot easier in macOS Mojave and iOS 12 by improving Siri. This means you no longer have to go through all those steps, and you will quickly see the password you are looking for.
This is how you request a password via Siri
On the Mac, select the Siri icon in your dock or menu bar. Then hold down the Cmd + space key combination or say “Hey Siri” if your Mac supports it. Then simply ask Siri for a password, for example: ‘Show my password for Bol.com’.
Siri does not speak your password out loud for security reasons, but it will open the password manager in Safari directly. Here you will still have to enter a password or use Touch ID, but you will have the correct password in front of you a lot faster. Because then it is not first the overview, but the requested account is shown.
In addition, you can have Siri automatically enter the requested password thanks to AutoFill, when you open Spotify and need to log in, for example. On your iPhone or iPad, you simply say ‘Hey Siri’, hold down the home button or on an iPhone X or newer the lock button to activate Siri. Ask for the desired password and unlock the passwords. Then tap the password to copy it or share it with loved ones via AirDrop.
Voice assistant improved in several areas
Not only does Siri know how to get your passwords faster, the voice assistant knows more anyway. For example, the assistant now has more knowledge of celebrities, sports results and competition schedules of, for example, MotoGP, Formula 1 and more motor sports.
Do you own a MacBook Pro 2018, MacBook Air 2018 or an iMac Pro (2017)? Then you are lucky that you can use the ‘Hey Siri’ voice command for the above things. This is possible because these devices have Apple’s T2 chip.
