Tip: Stop the YouTube app popup and watch videos in Safari

If you want to watch a YouTube video on the iPhone and you have the YouTube app, Safari preferably sends you directly to the app. But how can you get around that popup? You can read it in this article.

Watch YouTube in Safari

You want to watch a YouTube video while surfing. The iPhone therefore often automatically opens a popup menu in which you can choose to watch the video in the YouTube app. 9to5Mac found a handy way to get around that popup so you can just keep looking in your browser without being sent to Google’s app.

By the way, there are good reasons to just watch YouTube videos in Safari instead of with the app. This way you have more options and settings for your videos in the browser that are not yet in the app.

You must do this

Tip: Stop the YouTube app popup and watch videos in Safari

If you go to the YouTube website, you will automatically see the popup to go to the app. Press ‘Cancel’ and enter the same URL again in the Internet bar. Hit return again and the page will load without notifying the YouTube app. Loading again always works, but you will have to do it every time you browse YouTube. Yet that is always faster than opening the app.

After you load the page a second time, you will likely land on the mobile version. The YouTube screen is then neatly adapted to your screen size and you can recognize it by the ‘M’ in front of the url. If you prefer to go to the desktop version, that is also possible. After opening YouTube, hold your finger on the ‘Refresh’ button next to the url in the internet bar and choose ‘Ask for desktop version’.

If you want to return to the mobile site, you can always do that. You then enter m.youtube.com in the browser bar.
