More and more companies let you download your personal data that they collect about you. In this tip, we’ll show you how to download the data WhatsApp has about you.

Thanks to the new European privacy legislation, companies must take measures about what they do with the personal data of their customers. After all, it must become easier for customers to switch to a competitive service. More and more services let you download your data, or are working on the option to do this. For example, you can request your entire profile from Facebook, and Apple is working on downloading your data for your Apple account in the meantime.
WhatsApp now also offers the option to make all data that the service has about you downloadable. This is not about the content of your chats, but information such as your telephone number, which phone you have and how often you use WhatsApp. Follow the step-by-step plan below to request this information.
- Open Whatsapp and tap ‘Settings’;
- Go to Account and choose ‘Request account information’;
- Tap on ‘Request report’;
- You will receive your data on the date that appears.
As soon as your data is ready, you will receive a notification from the chat app. Via the application you can download a file containing all the data WhatsApp has about you. You have a few weeks to download that file; after that you have to apply for it again.
Do you want to permanently delete your WhatsApp account instead of downloading your data? Then follow the step-by-step plan above and choose ‘Delete my account’ under ‘Account’. Enter your phone number and confirm with the big red button. Keep an eye on: you will have lost all your WhatsApp data permanently with this step if you have not downloaded it.
