Tip: this is how you listen to Apple Music via your browser

It is now possible to listen to Apple Music through your browser. The web player is not made by Apple itself, but by an independent music lover. We explain how it works.

Apple Music Web player: this is how you listen to music via the browser

Apple Music was released in 2015, but it hasn’t been possible to use the music service through your browser for all these years. Apple did release a web version of the music service, but it is limited. For example, you cannot pause songs. Developer Naveed Golafshani thought this could be done better and decided to make an unofficial web player. This is a lot more complete than the official version and works as follows:

  1. Go to the website Playapplemusic.com on your Mac or PC;
  2. Click on the three lines at the top left and choose ‘Login’;
  3. Enter your Apple ID and password. Rest assured: the website does not store this data. You log in via Apple. Give consent when asked for;
  4. You are now logged in and can play music via your browser.

Listening to music via the web version is useful if you don’t have an iPhone with you, or if you’re using a public computer, such as in the library. You are often not allowed to install software on this, so playing music via iTunes is not an option. Of course it cannot be that you would rather not install iTunes on your own computer.

The unofficial web player is well put together and most options have been thought of. For example, press the gear at the top right to adjust the music quality. By default, this is set to 256kbps, but if you choose 64kbps, less data will be used. The button on the right shows which songs are in your playlist.

Extended version

The Apple Music web player will continue to work as usual. In addition to being able to search for albums and songs, it is also possible to view your music library. You play songs by simply clicking on them. With the buttons at the bottom you can rewind and fast forward to another song, and pause the song.

Of course you can also use the unofficial web player on your iPad and iPhone, but then it is more sensible to just play music via the app. As said, the website is not made by Apple itself and therefore there are some snags. For example, you can’t listen to the radio or change the playback order of songs. In addition, tracks falter every now and then.
