Tip: This is how you make a heart video with your Apple Watch

Curious about how your heart is doing? You can find out with your Apple Watch by making a heart video. This is how you do that.

Make heart video with the Apple Watch: before you start

Before we explain how to make an Apple Watch heart movie, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first (and most important) is that this feature is not intended to provide a professional diagnosis. The app is made to check for atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) and show your heart rate.

Apple also warns against this. For example, the app cannot detect a heart attack, blood clots or stroke. Heart disease is also not visible. Never trust the result of the CG blindly, but always contact a doctor if in doubt.

In addition, the app only works from the Apple Watch 4, because it contains the necessary hardware to make an electrocardiogram. You must also be running at least watchOS 5 and have iOS 13 installed on your paired iPhone.

This is how you configure the Apple Watch ECG app

Before you can get started, you must first activate the EKG app in the Watch app on your iPhone. You do this as follows:

  1. Open the Watch app on the iPhone that is paired with your Apple Watch;
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Heart’ in the app overview;
  3. Tap on ‘Configure ECG in Health’;
  4. Now open the Health app and tap ‘Configure ECG app’ in the window that appears;
  5. Enter your date of birth and follow the steps on the screen.

Now that you have configured the EKG app, the companion app is available on your Apple Watch. You can recognize this by a white circle with a red line indicating a heartbeat.

Make an Apple Watch heart trace (ECG)

Now that all the above steps have been done, it is time to actually make an ECG. This takes about thirty seconds. Make sure your Apple Watch is snug on your wrist. This will give you the best result.

  1. Open the ECG app on your Apple Watch;
  2. Keep your finger on the Digital Crown;
  3. Hold your finger on the Crown for thirty seconds, a clock counts down on the screen of the Apple Watch and you see how your heart rate is mapped;
  4. Afterwards you can read the results on your Apple Watch or in the Health app on your iPhone.

Every heart movie that the Apple Watch makes is automatically sent to the Health app. This creates a handy overview of all the measurements you have taken.

Healthy with your Apple watch

The Apple Watch is getting more and more health functions. To achieve the best sports results, it is important to calibrate the watch every now and then. Afterwards, for example, running apps show more accurately how effective your sports session was.
