From iOS 14 you also have more freedom of choice in CarPlay. You can now set a CarPlay background yourself. That is how it works.
This way you can set a background for CarPlay
The background of CarPlay used to be black by default. In iOS 13 it was already possible to make the background lighter by setting the light or dark mode. With the arrival of iOS 14, it becomes possible to personalize CarPlay more by setting a wallpaper.
The wallpapers are inspired by iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, but don’t have to be the same as your iPhone. Unfortunately, it is not (yet) possible to set your own image as a background. This is how you adjust your background:
- Connect your iPhone to CarPlay;
This can be done by your iPhone with a Lightning cable or wirelessly, if your car supports this.
- Open CarPlay on the screen in your car;
- Then open the Settings app in CarPlay;
If necessary, first navigate to the app overview with the apps button at the bottom left.
- Tap on ‘Wallpaper’;
- Choose the desired background;
The background changes in light and dark mode.
- Tap Set to confirm your choice.
Or tap Cancel to choose a different background.
Setting a new wallpaper isn’t the only improvement in CarPlay. For example, iOS 14 also adds three app categories: for parking, electric cars and ordering food. CarPlay also finally works in portrait mode and the existing apps have also been upgraded.
