Tip: this is how you set default programs on your Mac

Do you want your files to be opened in a different default program? iPhone explains how to set that up very easily.

Set default programs

The MacBook always opens your files automatically in a standard program. This way, your images are always opened in the macOS ‘Preview’ program. Don’t you want this? Then you can easily set a different program yourself.

The Mac recognizes different file types and has automatically set which program opens a specific type of file. Unless you click on ‘Open with…’ to click on another program. But do you always want to open certain file types in a certain program? Then you can set that to happen automatically. You do this as follows:

  1. Open Finder and navigate to a file for which you want to change the default program, for example an image (.jpg);
  2. Click on the file with your right mouse button and choose ‘Get info’;
  3. A new window will open in which you can click the drop-down menu ‘Open with:’;
  4. Here you choose the program (for example Pixelmator) for which you want this type of file to be opened from now on;
  5. Click on ‘Change all …’;
  6. Confirm by clicking on ‘Continue’.

From now on, all files of the same type will be opened in this program. Do you still want to choose a different program to open your files? You can always change the default program in the same way.
