It is well known that the Apple Watch is a smart companion for sports. In this tip, we’ll show you how to start a workout and how the Watch keeps track of your favorite sport.
This is how you start a workout on your Apple Watch
During the day, your Apple Watch pays close attention to what you are doing. This fills the rings of the Activity app with calories from exercise, active minutes and hours that you’ve been standing. But if you are going to exercise, you naturally want your Watch to measure exactly what you are doing.
To measure your sports performance as accurately as possible, you should turn on the workout on your Apple Watch before you start exercising. It is also important that you choose the right sport to ensure that the Watch knows exactly what you are doing. Follow the step-by-step plan below to get started as soon as possible.
Start workout

- Open the Workout app on your Watch;
- Choose from the list of sports which workout you want to do;
- Wait for the counter to count down (or tap the screen) and start exercising.
Do you want to practice a sport that is not in the list? Then choose ‘Other’. After you have finished exercising, you can name your ‘Other’ workout. This list contains a number of other sports, including strength training, for example. If you have chosen a workout here once, it will be immediately ready to be switched on during your next workout.
You can also switch to another sport during your workout. Swiping to the right while your existing workout is in progress will bring up the New icon with the plus sign. By tapping this, you choose a different workout, after which your existing workout ends and changes to the other one. This is useful if, for example, you go for a run after lifting weights, or are training for a triathlon.
