This way you prevent Google Calendar spam
In recent weeks, crazy appointments have increasingly appeared in the calendars of Google Calendar users. You don’t have to worry that your account has suddenly been hacked, but the vulnerability in Google Calendar is quite annoying. Often you suddenly see appointments in your calendar from people you do not know, which are then linked to a phishing link.
It turns out that spammers have discovered a weak spot in the link between Gmail and Google Calendar, so that they can automatically post a spam appointment in your calendar via an email with an invitation. Even if such an e-mail ends up in your spam, it will also appear in your calendar.
This is also annoying for iOS users, as it is possible to link Google Calendar with Apple’s Calendar app, which is standard on all iPhones and iPad. The fake events can therefore also appear in the Google Calendar app on your iOS device.
This way you can prevent the Google Calendar spam
Fortunately, there is a way to stop and delete the spam. To do this, follow the steps below.
- Open Google Calendar in the browser on Mac or PC (so do not use the mobile app);
- Click on the gear at the top right to open the menu and choose ‘Settings’;
- Select ‘Appointment settings’ on the left;
- Here you will see the option ‘Automatically add invitations’. You probably have the feature turned on, but you can turn it off by choosing ‘No, only show invitations I have responded to’
- Then go to ‘Appointments from Gmail’ in the left menu and uncheck the box ‘Automatically add appointments from Gmail to my calendar’.
Do you want to immediately delete recurring spam appointments that are already in your calendar? Then go to the Google Calendar website and open the settings. There you then have to disable the option ‘Show declined appointments’. Once you have done this, you will no longer see annoying spam appointments in your calendar.
