Tip: This is how you take photos via an Apple Watch

The Apple Watch doesn’t have a camera, but your iPhone does. In this tip, we’ll show you how to take photos from your watch.

Apple Watch: use camera

This may change with the Apple Watch Series 6, but current Apple watches do not have a camera. You can take a photo via the paired iPhone. This is ideal for when you want to remotely correct the incidence of light, for example, without having to walk to your phone all the time.

This is how you take photos with an Apple Watch:

  1. Open the Camera app on your Apple Watch (or ask Siri);
  2. You now look along with the screen of your iPhone on the watch;
  3. Position your iPhone so that you can take a good photo from a distance;
  4. Tap the shutter button on the Apple Watch screen to take a photo.

Taking a good photo takes time. For example, do you want to adjust the exposure? Then, on the Apple Watch screen, tap the area where you think more light is needed. The iPhone camera will now automatically focus on this part. You can also take a Live Photo via the Apple Watch. To do this, simply tap the screen and choose ‘Live’. You can also zoom in and out by turning the Digital Crown on the Watch.

You can also switch between the rear and front camera of your iPhone via the Apple Watch. To do this, tap the watch screen and choose ‘Invert’. In the same way you can turn the flash on / off, activate the self-timer and, for example, switch on HDR. Choosing a different camera mode, such as Time Lapse or Slow Motion, is not possible via your Apple Watch. You do need your iPhone for this.
