Tip: This is how you use Google Smart Lock on your iPhone in 5 steps

The Smart Lock app from Google has been updated, so that you can now use your iPhone as an extra security key when logging in with Google accounts.

Two-factor authentication with your iPhone

Android smartphones have been able to use them as two-factor authentication when logging into Google services for a while. Thanks to the update, iPhones can now also be used as a security key for two-factor authentication.

Two-step verification or two-factor authentication is increasingly used. That is also wise, because a password alone is often not secure enough. Sometimes a code is sent via SMS, but this is also less secure than two-factor authentication with a different (physical) key. For example, if you log in to your MacBook, you can use your iPhone as an extra key. This then works just like a physical security key.

This is how you set up Google Smart Lock

With Smart Lock, a code is sent to your iPhone via bluetooth. When you log in, it is therefore first of all important that your iPhone is nearby and that bluetooth is switched on. As a result, it does not go via the internet, which also ensures more security. This is how you set it up:

  1. Download Google Smart Lock in the App Store (you will find a download link at the bottom of this article);
  2. Enter the email address you use to log in to Google services;
  3. Allow the app to use bluetooth and send notifications. This is important, otherwise the security key will not work;
  4. Log in with your Google account;
  5. Choose your iPhone to add it as a security key.

If you now log in to a Google service with your account, a code will also be sent to your iPhone after entering your password. You then enter this code, after which you can enter your account.

Two-step verification and Apple

Privacy is very important to Apple. The company has also set up two-step verification via Apple ID. You can also easily set up two-factor authentication on your Apple device. It is also possible to use a security key without your iPhone (or other Apple device). Read our tip about setting a physical security key with iOS 13.3.
