Apple confirms that the performance of iPhones is being slowed down to save older batteries. But what about the battery in your iPhone? We explain how to check this.
Checking the iPhone battery health: this is how you do it
To ensure that an old iPhone does not fail continuously, Apple reduces performance. That gives you an iPhone that just keeps working, but is a bit slower than you are used to. Apple will let you know in iOS via the method below if your battery needs maintenance, but will only indicate this very late.

That is annoying, because you do not know whether your iPhone is starting to fail, or whether your battery is simply the cause of the problem. Fortunately, there is a handy free app in the App Store that checks the health of the battery. This ‘Battery Life’ app works as follows:

Test iPhone battery wear with Battery Life
- Download the Battery Life app from the App Store (link);
- Open the app, the wear level is calculated immediately;
- Afterwards, look at the percentage of wear and the color of your screen: green is good, orange is medium and red stands for high wear;
- Tap the menu and ‘Raw data’ to view the capacity of your battery.
A new battery for 89 euros
Does the above steps show that the battery of your iPhone has had its day? Then you can consider replacing the battery. This not only makes your iPhone last longer, you also bring the performance back to the old level.
Apple asks 89 euros to replace a battery on your iPhone. All you have to do is return the device to an Apple Store, after which the staff will take it over for you. This option will be the best for most users as it does not require you to unscrew your iPhone yourself.
If you still want to replace the battery independently, we recommend that you take a look at iFixit. This website has extensive guides that take you step by step through the process. They also sell handy sets with all the necessities.
Be aware of the risks
Replacing your battery in this way is cheaper if everything goes well, although of course you run the risk of causing irreparable damage to the device in this way. For example, with the iPhone 7 you have to take into account special parts that guarantee the watertightness of the device. We therefore recommend that you simply bring your iPhone to Apple to do this job. Because having a battery replaced for a few tens is always cheaper than buying a whole new iPhone.
