Twitter has updated its privacy policy. A page has been added to the app where users can set themselves which data Twitter can and cannot share.
New Twitter Privacy Policy
Users who launch the Twitter app for the first time after the change will automatically see the list. There it is immediately possible to give access to the service or to refuse to share personal information. If you have deleted the message, it is also possible to change the settings later. Below we explain how to do this.
Share Twitter data settings
You can adjust the sharing of your Twitter data as follows:
- Open the Twitter app on iOS;
- Go to Settings (via Profile> gear);
- Tap on ‘Privacy and security’;
- Choose ‘Personalization and data’ (or ‘Personalization and data’ if the app hasn’t translated it yet);
- Turn off the sliders for data you don’t want to share.
For example, this page states that Twitter may share certain private information with specific partnerships. It is a bit vague what data that is, according to Twitter in any case never your name, e-mail address or telephone number. You can also indicate whether the service is allowed to know where you are. By sharing your current location, Twitter can “personalize content based on the places you have visited.”
All data available on request
In a new blog post on the website, Twitter describes the latest updates for users. In addition to more control over what you want to share, the app also offers more insight into Twitter data. By tapping ‘View your Twitter data’ at the bottom of the ‘Personalization and data’ page, you can see what the social network knows about you. Here you can also see, for example, how many target groups your account is included in and how many advertisers. All data can be requested by e-mail from Twitter.
