Thanks to Continuity, the feature with which Apple tries to make iOS and Mac OS better communicate with each other, it is possible to use your iPhone as a modem for your Mac in a simple way. That is how it works.
If you’re in a place where you don’t have Wi-Fi and you need to get online with your Mac, iPad or iPod Touch, you can create a personal hotspot with your iPhone. And that is extremely easy. All you need is an iPhone with at least iOS 8 and if you are using a Mac, it must be a fairly new model. Suitable are an iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or Mac Mini from 2012 or newer or a Mac Pro from late 2013.
How do you enable an Instant Hotspot?
Creating your own hotspot with your iPhone is super simple. Go through the following steps:
- Check if the devices you use (iPhone and Mac, iPad or iPod touch) are signed in to the same iCloud account. To check that, go to ‘Settings> iCloud’;
- Your iPhone serves as the modem, open the ‘Settings’ on that device;
- Go to ‘Personal Hotspot’ and turn the switch to green.
Your iPhone is hereby active as a hotspot and can be used with your Mac, iPad or iPod touch. Please note: you may have to pay extra for this, because a connection via 3G or 4G is of course at the expense of your internet bundle.
How do you use Instant Hotspot on Mac?
You must be running at least OS X Yosemite on the Mac to use Instant Hotspot. Go to the WiFi icon at the top of the screen and you will immediately see your iPhone. Click on it and you will connect right away, no password is even required as your devices are signed in to the same iCloud account.
