Hablas español? Probably not, but translating a website with your iPhone or iPad is fortunately very easy. In this article we explain how it works.
Translate website with iPhone iPad in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14
The iPhone and iPad have a built-in translation app since iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. It also works in Safari, Apple’s own browser. Unfortunately, it doesn’t speak Dutch yet, but you can, for example, translate pages into English. How to translate a website:
- To start
Open the Safari app on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to a foreign website, such as the Spanish-language version of CNN in the example;
- Translate
Tap the ‘aA’ icon at the top left of the screen and press the translate option. The page will now be converted to (probably) English;
- To break down
Have you read the page and do you want to go back to the original language? Then tap the ‘aA’ icon again at the top left of the screen and choose ‘Show original’.
From that moment on you will see the website in its original language again. As long as the option is on, texts are automatically translated. When you navigate to a new website that is in a different language, the function is automatically turned off. At that moment you have to tap the ‘aA’ icon again to translate the texts.
About the Translate app
The ability to translate sites is part of Vertaal, a brand new app in iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. As you might expect from the name, this is a competitor to Google Translate.
Unfortunately Apple’s holiday guide doesn’t speak Dutch yet, but you can translate to and from Arabic, Chinese, German, French and Spanish, for example. English and Italian are also possible. Translate also works offline and has a built-in function to speak the translated text.
