With the help of Apple’s standard map app it is possible to follow hiking routes. In some cities you can even use this with the help of augmented reality. Step by step you can see on the screen where you have to walk.
The augmented reality walking routes are a tool that makes it easier to navigate through an unknown city. To be able to use the function you need an iPhone with an A12 (iPhone XS or newer). Some users find the AR routes disturbing and in some cases they are automatically activated. We explain how you can disable this.
Augmented reality walking routes
In the augmented reality function for cards, two views are available, the normal map view and the AR display. The latter is automatically activated if you keep your iPhone upright. After this, the iPhone will scan the environment with the help of the camera and try to determine where you are. Subsequently, directions are projected on the streets that become visible on the iPhone screen.

The disadvantage of the function is that it demands a lot from the battery life and that constant data traffic is sent to determine what your exact location is. If route guidance via the standard map display is sufficient for you, you can disable the AR display. Your iPhone will then no longer switch from the standard to the AR display and back if you keep the iPhone right.

Turn off AR display
If you do not want the map view to change if you lift or point your iPhone, you can switch it off. For this you can go to the iOS Settings app:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- In the Settings app to: Apps â–¸ Cards
- In the ‘Route’ section you switch off the option ‘Til to view’ at ‘on foot’.
Your iPhone will then no longer from the standard to the AR display and switch back.
