It’s been a long wait, but Twitter finally has an official app for macOS again. The app is now free to download and runs on Apple’s latest software platform Catalyst.
Finally: Official Twitter macOS App Now Available
More than a year ago, Twitter pulled its app from the App Store for the Mac. The social network wanted to focus on providing the same experience on all platforms, and hoped that users would use the web version of the service.
That’s about to change now that macOS Catalina is available for the Mac. With this major update, it has become easier for developers to transfer iPad apps to the Mac, thanks to Apple’s Catalyst software program. Twitter has made good use of this.

This means that you must be running at least macOS Catalina to use this Twitter Mac app. It also means that the app has many similarities with the iOS app, although some extras have been added that only come in handy on the Mac. For example, you can open multiple windows at the same time, change the size of the window, receive notifications of notifications and there is a Dark Mode that colors with the rest of the software.
The big disadvantage that we have discovered in our short time with the app is that there are no columns in the app. In the alternative Twitter app Tweetdeck, these allow you to quickly scroll through various timelines, searches, and notifications. The new Twitter macOS app is now available to download for free from the Mac App Store.
Catalyst has a rocky start
This week we found out that many developers are less than happy with Apple’s Catalyst program. An extensive article showed how developers find the software still too limited and it does not create an ideal situation for both users and developers.
The ball now seems to be in Apple’s court to improve Catalyst so that you can use many more iOS apps on your Mac in the future. In any case, Twitter has shown that it is possible.
