From now on, Gmail’s new design is an opt-out functionality. Google has been rolling out the new design since February. At that time you could voluntarily indicate whether you wanted to use it. But now you have to reverse the action yourself if you want the old design back.
What exactly is going on? Earlier this year, Google announced a design change for Gmail. Not only does the popular email service gain access to more Material Design elements, Google is also integrating the Meet, Spaces and Chat components in a better way.
Now you probably see all those separate parts on the left in the menu. You view your open chats and can, for example, immediately start a meeting via Meet. Although this doesn’t change in the basics, Gmail as a whole will get a clearer layout.
The New Gmail Design
The fact that Google is rolling out the new design is nothing new. After all, this has been happening for months, but the roll-out is progressing steadily. More and more people are coming into contact with the new design. Previously, this was an opt-in experience: you were notified that the design was available and could indicate that you wanted to use it.
Now it’s the other way around: Google will now make the change for you and you can manually revert to the old design. Whether you should want that is another matter, because in the end we all have to believe in it.
Google will roll out the updated design later in 2022 namely out for everyone and there is no going back. So what can you expect from the new design? Well, mainly overview. The messy layout on the left gets an extra bar, which gives you quick access to the four products within Gmail: your mail, Meets, Chats and Spaces.
Single click
When you click on one of the parts on the left, the screen changes immediately. So you get direct access, with an extra click, to functions that you may already know.
Via the Quick Settings on the right (the gear icon) you adjust which buttons you want to use on the right (after you have switched, automatically or manually). Back to the original Gmail viewwhich takes you back to the old format.
If you don’t like the new design, you can still go back now, but remember that Google will transfer you – mandatory – to the new experience later this year. So peel off that plaster and start getting used to the new design.
