Upgrading to Windows 11: check these things first

Are you planning to upgrade your current computer to Windows 11? Of course you can, but make sure you are well prepared. In this article, we’ll discuss essential steps you need to take to ensure a smooth installation.

Before we even begin, we recommend that you verify that your computer is eligible for the Windows 11 upgrade. You can look up the specs and see for yourself, but you can also go to Institutions > Update and Security to go. There you will immediately see whether your current hardware is suitable for the upgrade.

Then it is important to enter your data in a backup to place. This way you can be sure that you don’t lose anything in the preparation process. In principle, little can go wrong, but you never know. So if your data is not in a cloud, storage medium or NAS, now is the time to do so. Another general tip is to create enough space for the system. Upgrading to Windows 11 will cost you about 64 GB, so make sure you have that space. Delete all files that you no longer need, such as the temporary files. But only if you run out of space.

One of the most important requirements is the TPM 2.0 chip. You need it to protect your sensitive data. You can check whether such a chip is present on your motherboard via the Run menu (if not, you will have to install it yourself). To do this, press Windows key + R and type tpm.msc. If it says that the chip is ready for use, go to Institutions > Update and secure > System recovery. Go to Advanced Boot Options and press Restart now. Select in the blue screen Troubleshooting > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings > Restart > Startup. Then indicate that you want to activate TMP 2.0.

Secure Boot is also a required security option. Open the advanced security options again and follow the same steps you performed previously for TPM 2.0. After you press Startup, select the option to activate Secure Boot.

Furthermore, you need a Microsoft account for Windows 11. So make sure you have that information at hand. If you don’t have an account, you need to create one. Do this in advance, so that the installation runs smoothly. In addition, make sure you have a stable internet connection, as there is a lot of data to download. And if you work on a laptop, keep the plug in the socket for a while. This way you can be sure that the installation will go well.
