Sharing a funny YouTube video with your friends is often more fun than watching it yourself. With Uptime, this becomes possible no matter where your friends hang out.
Uptime: Watch YouTube together
Uptime is a project of a number of Google employees, who are allowed to work on side projections during working hours. In the past, this resulted in Gmail and Google Maps, but today’s app is also worth discussing.

The new Google app meets a function that, in our opinion, is still missing in the official YouTube app. In practice, we share just as many videos as we watch them ourselves, but you are always dependent on a separate app for this. Uptime prevents this by letting you watch a video with your friends, so that you can react to what is happening without switching apps.
In addition to watching videos live, you can also create and share short clips in the app. By following others you can see which videos they like and watch. If Uptime catches on, it seems a logical step for Google to include this sharing function in the official YouTube app. Not a bad step, since YouTube has already expanded the app’s share menu several times in recent months.
You can install Uptime now
Remarkably, the app is currently only available for iOS, although you do need an American App Store account to download it now. Then use the login code ‘PIZZA’ to be one of the first to test the app. It is not yet known when Uptime will also appear in the Dutch App Store. It may be a gradual rollout, so keep an eye on the App Store if you’re curious about the latest Google app.
