Not only can you use the flash while taking photos or videos, you can also use it as a flashlight. Handy if you have to look for something in the dark or want to light up the road during an evening walk. You can activate the flashlight function in different ways, we explain it step by step.
Use flash as a flashlight
You can use the flash of your iPhone or iPad as a flashlight. You can activate this feature in three ways: Via the lock screen, control panel or using Siri.
Flashlight via lock screen
Do you own an iPhone with Face ID? Then you can immediately activate the flash from the lock screen of your iPhone. Tap the screen and then press and hold the flashlight icon at the bottom of the screen. The light on the back of the device immediately turns on.

Activate flash via the control panel
Do you have an iPhone with a home button or an iPad? Then you can easily activate the flashlight via the control panel. In some cases you must first add this to the control panel. You do this via Settings â–¸ Control panel â–¸ tap the plus button next to ‘Flashlight’ â–¸ Choose a desired position if necessary. Then you can use the shortcut.
- Open the control panel
- Tap the flashlight icon to turn on the flash
- Place your finger on the flashlight icon to adjust the brightness
- Tap again to turn off the light

Nice to know: Apple is known for paying attention to detail. If you activate the flashlight via the control panel or lock screen, you will notice that the switch of the flashlight icon changes when switching it on and off.
Flashlight via Siri
Finally, you can also ask Siri to turn on the light on the back of your iPhone or iPad. Use the voice command Hey Siri, turn on the flashlight and the voice assistant does the rest. Of course, you can also switch off the lighting again using speech.
