Use messages via satellite on an iPhone

Available on iPhone 14 (with iOS 18) or newer

Since iOS 18 it is possible to send messages via a satellite connection if there is no mobile and Wi-Fi cover. You can send and receive text messages and tapbacks via iMessage and SMS via the connection.

However, the function is only available in the United States and Canada for the time being. If you go on holiday in these countries, you can use it. You can use the messages via satellite service for free for the first two years. This free period starts after the activation of an iPhone 14 or newer.

What is Messages via satellite

With the messages via satellite service you can send messages via the standard Message app from iOS. If the person you want to send a message does not have an iPhone (with at least iOS 18) or another brand of mobile phone, you can use SMS messages via satellite. Some message functions are not supported with the use of a satellite connection. For example, in a group message you cannot send or receive photos or videos, audio messages, stickers or messages.

Sending messages via satellite is much slower than via a standard WiFi or a mobile connection. In ideal conditions with a direct view of the air and the horizon it can take 30 seconds for a text message to be sent. Under trees it can take longer than a minute before the message is sent. You may not be able to connect to a satellite under a heavy leaf deck or if you are surrounded by other obstacles.
