Use SOS emergency notification via satellite to alert emergency services

With SOS emergency notification via satellite it is possible to approach emergency services in an emergency at locations where there is no mobile or wifin network available. The function has also been available in the Netherlands and Belgium since iOS 16.4 and can only be used on the iPhone 14 (Pro) or newer.

If you want to use the service, it is important that you first set this in a correct way, otherwise the function will not work. As soon as you have activated SOS emergency notification, you can use it. We explain how that works exactly for you.

Connect to SOS emergency notification via satellite

If you need the emergency services while you are out of the reach of a mobile network or Wi-Fi network, you can use SOS emergency notification via satellite in the to land where the function is supported. It works like this:

  1. Try to call 112 or the emergency services. Even if your normal mobile network is not available, the iPhone will try to destroy the 112 call via other networks if they are available.
  2. If you cannot call, tap ‘SMS in an emergency via satellite’ to send the emergency services an SMS message. You can also text “112” or “SOS” in the Message app to “112” or “SOS”, and then tap ‘Emergency Services’.
  3. Tap ‘report emergency’ and follow the instructions on the screen.

After you are connected, your iPhone starts to share an SMS conversation through essential information, such as your Medical ID and your contacts for emergencies, your answers to the questionnaire in the event of an emergency, your location (including height) and the battery level of your iPhone. You can also choose to share the information that you send to the emergency services with your contacts for emergencies.

To connect to a satellite, keep the phone in a natural way in your hand. You don’t have to rise the phone or keep it above your head, but don’t put it in your bag or in a backpack. If you are under a dense leaf roof or are surrounded by other obstacles, you may not be able to connect to a satellite, try to move if possible.
