Using augmented reality walking routes in the Apple card app

If you are on your visit in a strange city, then it is not always easy to find your way. A good help to find your way are the augmented reality (AR) walking routes that are available in the Apple card application.

The handy iOS function is unfortunately limited available in the Netherlands and Belgium and will undoubtedly be expanded at a later time. As a result, the function is not yet available in every Dutch or Belgian city.

What are AR walking routes in the Apple Cards App

The augmented reality walking routes are a tool that makes it easier to navigate through an unknown city. To be able to use the function you need an iPhone with an A12 (iPhone XS) or newer.

If you use the augmented reality walking routes, keep your iPhone upright. As a result, the iPhone will scan the environment with the help of the camera and try to determine where you are. Subsequently, directions are projected on the streets that become visible on the iPhone screen.

Using augmented reality walking routes in the Apple card app

When using the augmented reality walking routes, it is important that you keep your iPhone upright as long as you use the function. The iPhone continuously looks where you are and tries your location to determine it. If you do not keep your iPhone upright, the standard map display appears automatically.

Where are augmented reality walking routes available?

The augmented reality walking routes are unfortunately only limited available in a few major world cities. In the Netherlands the position is available in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. For Belgium, the function is only available in Brussels for the time being. In addition, you can also use it in some French cities (Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Paris), Singapore and various cities in the US, Japan and Australia.

The AR walking routes use in the Apple cards app

The operation of the augmented reality walking routes is simple, you can use the function as follows if you are in a supported area:

  1. Open Apple card app on your iPhone.
  2. Enter your destination and start a walking route.
  3. Tap at the top right of the AR-symbol and lift your iPhone, the area is now scanned by the iPhone camera. Make sure that enough buildings are visible on the screen.
  4. Follow the directions for your route that appear on the screen of your iPhone. Keep your iPhone down while navigating to view the normal map view. Lift your iPhone again to continue with the special AR display.

By tapping the AR symbol again at the top right, you switch off the augmented reality display.

Automatic adjustment of map display

If you do not want the map view to change if you lift or point your iPhone, you can switch it off. To do this, go to Settings â–¸ Apps â–¸ Tickets â–¸ Route â–¸ On foot â–¸ Switch off the ‘lift to view’ option.
