Using Google Maps offline: this is how you navigate without the internet

Do you want to prevent your mobile data from running out before you arrive at your (holiday) address? Then use Google Maps offline. That is how it works!

When you make sure you Google Maps If you can use it offline, you don’t just save mobile data. You also ensure that you can always continue navigating, even if you end up somewhere where there is no internet at all. This way you kill two birds with one stone!

It is therefore important to download the map of the area you are going to before leaving. If you want to save costs, you can of course do so while you are connected to WiFi. Naturally, the larger the area you want to download the map from, the more storage space it will cost. Depending on how much storage space you have on your iPhone, that’s something to keep in mind.

Download maps from Google Maps

Once you have downloaded the map of the area in question, you can use Google Maps offline and navigate that location without an internet connection. You do not have to open the card first. Everything works as usual, but it costs you nothing as long as you stay in the downloaded area. Download as follows:

  1. Open Google Maps and tap your photo at the top right;

  2. Tap ‘Offline Maps’;

  3. Tap ‘SELECT YOUR OWN CARD’;

  4. Adjust the map so that the desired area falls within the frame;

  5. When you’re satisfied, tap ‘DOWNLOAD’.

The map will now be downloaded and automatically given a name. You can change the name yourself by tapping on the three dots behind it and choosing ‘Change name’. You can also update and delete the map at any time here. By default, a downloaded card only expires after one year.

Turn off mobile data

If you can navigate offline in Google Maps, you no longer need mobile data. You may therefore consider temporarily disabling mobile data. That is also good for the battery life of your iPhone.

To turn off mobile data, open Control Center (swipe down from the top right). Then tap the icon in the green dot at the top left. Switching on is done in the same way.
