Initially, the HomePod is specifically designed for Apple Music, but other streaming services can support Apple’s smart speaker. At the moment, you can only Deezer and use Apple Music directly on the HomePod, Spotify unfortunately cannot do this yet, but it can via a detour.
It is unclear why Spotify does not support the HomePod, since the music service is integrated with Siri on the iPhone or iPad, among others, and Apple has opened the platform to external streaming services. However, it is possible to play music from Spotify on the smart speaker thanks to AirPlay.
Using Spotify on a HomePod
There are several ways to ensure that Spotify is used on Apple’s speaker. You can use AirPlay for this, this can be done manually or automatically. We explain how it works.
Autoplay via AirPlay
Starting with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and HomePodOS 17, you can ask the HomePod to play music via Spotify, using a paired iPhone or iPad and AirPlay.
You tell Siri on the HomePod to play music with the command: Hey Siri, play music on Spotify. The HomePod then sends the request to the iPhone and iPad and this device will then play the music on the HomePod via AirPlay. This requires that both devices are connected to the same wifi network.

Of course you can also ask for specific requests such as playing a specific playlist, album, artist, etc. as long as your command ends with ‘on Spotify’.
Manually Play Spotify on HomePod via iPhone or iPad
- Open the Spotify application
- Play a song, album or playlist
- Tap the speaker TV icon at the bottom
- Select ‘AirPlay or Bluetooth’
- Select the HomePod to start streaming

Stream Spotify to HomePod on Mac
- Open the Spotify application
- Play a song, album or playlist
- Open the control panel in the menu bar
- Click next to ‘sound’ to see the triangle with the waves
- Select the HomePod to start streaming

At the moment, you can only play your Spotify music on the HomePod via the above steps and AirPlay. Streaming music via Bluetooth in combination with another device is (also) not possible. We hope that Spotify will soon bring the streaming service to the HomePod.
Control Spotify with Siri on a HomePod
Once the music is playing, you can still use Siri to navigate through your music. For example, you can ask to play the next or previous song, adjust the volume, or ask who wrote this song or get more information about this artist. But that’s where it ends. It is not possible to play a specific song via Spotify, add the song to a playlist, mark it as a favorite, etc.
All music is generated on your iPhone, iPad or Mac and streamed to HomePod. If you close Spotify, the music on HomePod will also stop.
