Two factor authentication (2FA) is a popular way to better secure your online accounts. In addition to the password, you must also fill in an extra code that you generate via a verification app from Apple, Authy or Google Authenticator with two-factor authentication.
The functionality is standard via the iCloud key ring under MacOS Monterey, iOS 15, iPados 15 or newer. The generated Code OTP (One Time PIN code) is only valid for one login session or transaction. This creates an extra layer of security when you try to log in to a service from a new device.
Two factor authentication and Apple
Since iOS 18, iPados 18 and macOS Sequoia, Apple users can use the password app to manage their iCloud key ring passwords. In this app you can also easily generate two-factor authentication codes on iPhone, iPad or Mac
Before you can generate the codes, you must engage two-factor authentication or two-step verification for your internet accounts. You can read exactly how you do that in the highlighted article below.
Verification codes in Passwords app
- Open passwords on your iPhone, iPad or Mac
- Go to ‘Codes’
- Verification codes are displayed

From this overview you will see all verification codes of your accounts at a glance. These are all renewed every 30 seconds. From iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4 and macOS 15.4 it is indicated how long the code is still valid.
Information card
Thanks to the ‘codes’ category you will see all your verification codes in one overview, but that is not the only place where you can find them. The codes can also be viewed on the information card with all login details of the relevant account.
