Watchos: Translate text with your Apple Watch

Since iOS 14, the handy translation app standard is present on the iPhone in many languages. Since Watchos 11, the Translation app is also available on the Apple Watch, handy when you are traveling.

The operation of the translation app is fairly simple, after selecting a language you can translate texts. The app works a bit more convenient on an iPhone than on the small screen of an Apple Watch. Fortunately, you can also record the texts on the Apple Watch and have the translations say.

Translate spoken or written text with your Apple Watch

To translate text, use the translation app that is available as standard under Watchos. Follow the instructions below to start a translation:

  1. Open the translation app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Select the language to which you want to translate the text, use the exchange button to change the languages. You can choose from: Arabic, Chinese, German, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Ukrainian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish and Indonesian.
  3. Tap the microphone button and speak your text, your words are translated while you speak and type. You can also type the text, tap the ‘More options’ button for this, scroll down to ‘input mode’ and tap ‘keyboard’.

At the time you are translating you can use the following extra options:

Remove translation

Wipe to the right and tap the removal button to remove the translation.

Translate and have it pronounced

Use the play button to play the translation. To hear the translation automatically, tap the ‘More options’ button and then on ‘Play translations’. Here you can also adjust the speed of the pronunciation.

Save translation as a favorite

It is also possible to save a translation that you will use more often as a favorite. Wipe to the right for this and then tap the favorite (star) button.

You get access to the favorites by tapping the favorites symbol in the app, which is the stsymbol in the top left of the screen. Tap this and turn the digital crown to view your stored translations.
