It is not always clear which devices receive updates or upgrades from an Android version. Is your device getting an upgrade?
Operating system
A smartphone or tablet is nothing less than a very small computer with its own operating system. This system is constantly being tinkered with to make it better. And to close security holes. Google makes such an operating system: Android. Various manufacturers use Android, such as Samsung, Nokia, Sony, LG and Oppo. Since multiple manufacturers use Android, the Android devices differ from each other. One device is updated faster than the other.
Updates and upgrades
Every year a new version of Android is released. Google gives each version a number. Android 11 is the most recent version and Android 12 is expected in September 2021 (September 2021 info). A device that is updated from, for example, Android 10 to Android 11, gets an upgrade. So an upgrade is a completely new version of Android. An upgrade only appears once a year.
In addition, an existing version can be updated. Because new features are added to it. Or because a security problem has been discovered. The existing Android version will be updated. So an update updates an existing version. Updates appear regularly.
Android and manufacturers
Android was invented by Google. This company continues to develop the operating system. Moreover, it also makes the security updates. Google supplies Android to various manufacturers of smartphones and tablets. Any manufacturer, such as Samsung, HTC, Sony or Huawei, can customize Android for its own device. So they do. That is why a Samsung device works slightly differently than a Nokia device. This gives the consumer some choice, but this method has an important disadvantage: if Google adjusts Android, the manufacturers must also adjust their version. And that takes time.
When will updates and upgrades appear?
It depends on the manufacturer whether and how quickly upgrades appear on a device. The manufacturer determines. Not Google. As a result, some users only get this version on their device a year after Android 11 is released. Security updates are distributed more quickly, but again the manufacturer determines when they come.
My device will not get an upgrade
A device that gets stuck on a certain Android version can continue to function fine. Without risk. But with the necessary security updates.
