Dear
We found a jug-shaped nest (?) made of mud on a plexiglass plate in the garden. it measures about one to one and a half centimeters. We wonder which animal this could come from.
Thanks in advance for your answer. mvg Andre Lapeere

Answer
Dear Andrew,
It seems to me to be nests of mason wasps (also called clay wasps; subfamily Eumeninae of the family Vespidae, the wasps).
As the name suggests, some species (eg in the genus Eumenes, the urn wasps) are able to build beautiful urn-shaped nests in which a larva develops. On p. 320 of the guide “Guests of Bijenhotels” this is nicely illustrated and you can read more: http://www.denederlandsebijen.nl/bijenhotels/pdf/GastenVanBijenhotels.pdf
You can follow this up and see what comes out.
Regards,
Peter
