How can I recognize the graphical representation of real functions: polynomial, rational, irrational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions?

Answer
Rational and irrational functions often have vertical and horizontal asymptotes, while trigonometric functions are often periodic. In general, one learns to recognize functions from the graph by looking at some of each function family. ffunctions can be easily graphically represented using wolframalpha.com. So you can make the graph of a sine function there by means of the instruction:
plOt sin(X)
