What happens if you store food in plastic boxes or jars that are not marked as ‘freezer safe’?

Answer

Hi Kris,

The food itself will just freeze.

The term “not suitable for the freezer” indicates that the packaging material cannot withstand low temperatures and that the packaging is therefore more likely to break.

You could compare this to choosing between summer and winter tires for your car. Summer tires are used at relatively high temperatures. However, when it starts to cool, the rubber becomes harder and less elastic. This makes them wear out faster.

The same thing happens with some types of packaging material in the freezer: so it is possible that pieces of plastic break off when you try to pick the food out of the packaging.

Sincerely,

Geert-Jan
