What is data limit?

What is a data limit and how do you check that you are not over this limit?

Users of a tablet or smartphone with a mobile internet subscription will have to deal with a ‘data limit’. When you take out the mobile internet subscription, you can choose between unlimited internet or a data limit. This, together with the associated phone number, is attached to the SIM card.

Data limit means that you cannot make unlimited use of the internet within your subscription. So there is a limit to opening web pages, sending and receiving e-mail and using apps that require an internet connection. This limit is indicated in MB. This is the amount of data you are allowed to use. If you go beyond that, you will have to pay extra for that month or your connection will be very slow. This depends on the subscription.

You create an account for the mobile phone number via the website of the telecom provider where the mobile subscription has been taken out (for example T-Mobile, Vodafone or KPN). It states what type of subscription you have taken out and therefore also what the data limit is. Many providers have also developed an app for the smartphone or tablet for this.

Most telephones now have a built-in function that keeps track of how much data has already been sent and received. It differs per device how exactly you get to this function, but it is almost always via the settings of the device. There, search for a term like “data usage” or “mobile data limit” or tap Mobile network or Connections and view the possibilities. Set on a Samsung device to notify the smartphone when the limit is almost reached. Read here how to do that.
