What is the difference between a doctor and a professor, both at a university in Belgium?

There was already a question with professor, but is this used in Belgium? It therefore only concerns the titles of doctor and professor and the differences in position.

Asker: Tom, 19 years old

Answer

Doctor refers to an academic title; it is a diploma that is obtained on the basis of submitting and defending a dissertation within a specific field. Professor refers to a position within the university: it can be a lecturer, senior lecturer, full professor or full professor. Possession of a doctorate is, unless very exceptional, a minimum condition for holding a position as a professor.
