What kind of giraffes are there?

I don’t know if there are other types of giraffes, because I’m giving a talk about giraffes.

Answer

Dear Liza,

There is only one species of giraffe and it goes by the scientific name Giraffa camelopardalis. There are several subspecies that differ from each other, among other things, by their distribution area and fur markings. You can find most of the information on giraffe’s Wikipedia page.
If you look at it a little wider, there is the giraffe-like family: the Giraffidae. This contained many species that are all extinct (see e.g. the English site Tree of Life), except for one: the okapi – which you can admire in the Antwerp Zoo, for example – is therefore the closest living relative of the giraffe.
