What materials can you use to make a battery that supplies at least 12V and 100mA?

I would like to make a battery that can light up an LED light. I want to make this battery in a 250 mL beaker. But most galvanic cells can only produce 1.5 to 5V. How is this possible?

Hi Zeno,

The trick is to daisy-chain a number of cells. You can then add up the voltage of each individual cell.

The simplest way is to connect a number of AA or AAA batteries together: always connect the plus pole with the minus pole. To get 12 V you have to connect 8 batteries in this way. You can do that by soldering wires to each terminal, or you can buy a battery holder at the electronics store.
