Chat app WhatsApp does not yet have the option to apply filters to photos or videos. That may change in an upcoming version of the app. In addition, new functions are being tested.
WhatsApp Stickers, Quick Reply and Contacts
Update 15:17: In addition to these filters, WhatsApp also works on stickers. These appear at the bottom of the screen, just like with iMessage, so you can quickly choose a picture. The messaging service is also testing a new design for your contact list and a brand new ‘Quick Reply’ function.
By tapping on a message, you can post a comment under it. This is useful, for example, in a group conversation in which the messages follow each other in rapid succession. This way, all participants in the conversation know exactly what you are answering. These functions were also discovered by WABetaInfo.
WhatsApp filters in the making
The Twitter account WABetaInfo, which is aware of upcoming features in Whatsapp, described the innovation in a short tweet: “WhatsApp lets users put filters over images, videos and GIFs.” Nothing is known about a date of the rollout. WABetaInfo often presents its information based on changes in beta versions of the chat app, which are not yet present in the most recent public version of WhatsApp. For example, the account often announces functions months in advance, before they appear in the official app.
You can already share photos, videos and GIFs on WhatsApp, but not with a filter. Other chat apps and social media platforms have been offering that option for a long time. Instagram may be assisted to apply filters to media in WhatsApp. Both apps come under the parent company Facebook.
New features for WhatsApp
Recently, WhatsApp got more and more new functions that made more possible for users. Thus came the WhatsApp Status function. This allows users to upload pictures and videos that can be seen by all their contacts. They disappear on their own after 24 hours. The feature is similar to Instagram Stories, which in turn inspired Facebook from Snapchat Stories.
For a long time it was not possible to post GIFs on WhatsApp. That is now possible, even with built-in search function. Thanks to the drawing function, it is even possible to scribble on such a gif, for example to emphasize a situation or to add something to it.
Pin conversations
Much is still unclear about the filter function. These can be standard filters, but also Snapchat-like filters that allow users to put a mask over their face. WhatsApp would also work on options to, for example, pin WhatsApp conversations and share your location live.
