When will Apple release CarPlay 2.0? We know this now

The first cars with the new generation of CarPlay were supposed to appear in 2024, but this did not happen. When will Apple release CarPlay 2.0?

CarPlay 2.0

It has long been known that Apple is working on a new generation of CarPlay. The company announced CarPlay 2.0 in 2022, when it was revealed what changes would be coming to CarPlay. With the new version of CarPlay, almost all functions of the car are taken over by the operating system. This makes it possible, for example, to control the radio or the temperature via CarPlay.

That is not yet possible, so you have to use the car’s physical buttons. CarPlay is therefore much better integrated into the car, but has still not been officially released. New codes have recently surfaced in iOS 18.2, which indicate that Apple is still working on the new generation of CarPlay. When can we finally expect CarPlay 2.0?

New generation postponed again

After announcing CarPlay 2.0 in 2022, Apple remained silent for a long time. Apple’s website stated that more news would follow at the end of 2023. The company kept its word, because in December 2023 Apple announced which car brands the new generation of CarPlay will come to. This means we know which manufacturers are switching to CarPlay 2.0, but the update has not yet been officially released.

After the announcement, Apple adjusted the message on the website, which can still be read today the first cars with CarPlay 2.0 will appear at the end of 2024. We now know that the company did not meet that deadline. At the beginning of 2025, no car has yet been released that works with the new generation of CarPlay. It remains to be seen when that will happen, because Apple has not yet updated the CarPlay web page.

CarPlay 2.0 release unclear

It is therefore unclear when CarPlay 2.0 will be officially available in the first cars. The company will probably adjust the website about the operating system soon, but no major announcement will follow. In any case, the new codes in iOS 18.2 confirm that Apple is still working on an updated version of CarPlay. It is therefore unknown when CarPlay 2.0 will officially appear, but a release may follow later in 2025.

The first car brands have now unveiled their own version of CarPlay 2.0. For example, we already know what the updated operating system looks like in cars from Porsche and Aston Martin. However, there are also manufacturers who have already indicated that they will stop using CarPlay. Apple may need more time to fine-tune the operating system on all vehicles in consultation with various car manufacturers. Until then, much remains unclear about the release of CarPlay 2.0.
